no diagnostic beeps

Hello,

A few years ago I built a PC for a friend. Now it seems nearly dead.

Power-on works (lights, fans, +5vdc, +12vdc) but not much else.

Hard drive makes some noise then nothing. Same thing if ribbon cable is
disconnected from hard drive so I am sure that is just some hard drive
self testing.

Monitor screen remains dark. Same thing on my spare monitor.

No diagnostic beeps to indicate nature of problem.

The cover of the manual that came with the mainboard says:

PC100
Mainboard

Super 7
mainboard
M598 User's manual

The first page of the manual says:

Copright 1998
M598 Version 5.0
S5/December 1998

I suppose the lack of diagnostic beeps means the mainboard is dead. Any
chance I can find something more specific?

Feel free to be technical. I am an EE and should may be able to follow
details. Unfortunately, I have no access to any serious test equipment.

Or the PC speaker is not working?

strip it to CPU(HSF if it has one), video card, 1 stick of memory
no floppy, no HD's, no roms (disconnect the ribbons and the power leads)
boot it....getting video?
No? try a different stick of memory, if there were multiple
gotta spare(non ATX I think) PSU?

Or the PC speaker is not working?

There is also a sound system that is part oof the mainboard. External
speakers connected to that are also silent. I figure the external
speakers are controlled at a higher level so they might not emit
diagnostic beeps anyway.

The diagnostic beeps usually come from the on board PC speaker if
there is one?

OB sound does not supply beeps on all boards? I know if it has no OB sound then definitely not
(this one does and a few others)...heheh its one of those things I don't pay attention to anymore...its always been 'connect the PC
speaker' hear the beep so maybe comes out both when OB sound is present....damn I blame it on no coffee this morning.......

Hello Jad,

Thanx for the memory suggestion.

I borrowed memory from my own PC and that cured the ailing PC. I
reinstalled the old memory and the ailing PC is still ok. So I guess the
memory was poorly seated or that the contacts were dirty. I took an
eraser to the memory stick contacts before inserting one more time.

Internal speaker works fine. However, with keyboard, mouse, video all
disconnected, the PC boots up to Win98 just fine. A single beep as it
starts up (same as when all are connected). No diagnostic beeps about
missing monitor or keyboard.

Win98 does notice that the mouse is missing but not that the monitor and
keyboard are missing.

Anyway, it seems to be ok now. I'm running Scandisk and Defrag while I
have it for the night.

Thanx to all for the suggestions.

You're supposed to hear at least one beep. If you truly don't hear
anything, either your computer's power supply, motherboard, or PC speaker is
no good. Have a look here. It may help you sort things out.

glad it worked out....

Standard diagnostic procedure if you don't have test equipment is to start
replacing parts until you find the one that fixes it. Sounds like a dead
motherboard.

I believe they already solved it, by reseating the memory.
