Windows XP Pro wouldn't boot - Stopped with BSOD
Discovered (and removed) a bad memory module.
The PC now boots (both normal and safe mode) however all I end up with is
the mouse pointer and no desktop or start button. CTRL-Alt-Del doesn't bring
up anything.

All suggestions welcomed

From the error message it seems that one of your memory card is having bad
bits of data on it and causing this trouble!
Either try to test the RAM by using this tool and see if it will pass the
test or it will show bad RAM.
Try system Restore from Safe Mode and see if the issue will resolve.
2- Run a test for the Memory and also try to swap them around and clear any
dust may be in your PC case:
To test your memory download memtest from here:

HTH.

As per my original email - I tested the memory (even tried each module in
every possible slot) and ended up removing 1 bad module. Since then I have
tried a reinstall of Windows XP Pro however after the reinstall I still end
up with a blank screen containing the mouse pointer.

Does both the RAM sticks matching in version. A mismatch RAM can cause
troubel, try to start with only one Stick.
Did you installed the Chipset driver after a clean install of the operating
system?
Does it happen in Safe Mode?
If it doesn't can you give us the error message in Event Viewer if any?
