Newbie needs help.

Full Disclosure: I am not a techie -- I am strictly a user
of MS products and various applications for business and
personal reasons.

Problem: My PC (home use -- not connected to network)
doesn't generate either desktop icons or start up toolbar
when rebooted/started. I use task manager to go through
program files to start apps. I cannot either reload
Windows 2000 or download updates from MS as an error
message reads "c:\winnt\system32\tftp.exe" is in use/being
currently run. Net effect - I cannot use my PC without
time-consuming and roundabout methods to side-step problem
and I cannot find a correction. Major headache that may
prompt wiping out important business and personal files
(My Documents). First noticed when graphics went wonky
and then I was trying to cut and paste in Word but the
paste didn't work. Upon restarting/rebooting, only the
wallpaper appeared (no desktop icons or start toolbar at
the bottom)

Possible Relevant Issues: Believed to be the recipient of
a virus attack, but, in all honesty, having tried to
correct problem from a position of ignorance may have
contributed to further damage. Startup routine? Nvidia
driver? Power supply? worm? etc., are all pure speculation.

Request: Any and all suggestions are welcome before I
either spend big $$$$$ to have a guru toggle a switch or I
reload everything and lose my setup.

Thanking you in advance,

Sincerely

BJ

Thank you for your timely and considered help.
Unfortunately, it didn't work as planned. Can you suggest
something else? Again, thank you

I did as you instructed. explorer.exe is running under
the Processes tab but there has been no change (re: It is
still doing what it was doiong before.

Thank you for sticking with me. To confirm, I have
started the PC in Safe Mode and I have tried to reset
settings to "Last Known Good Configuration" (not verbatim)-
- to no avail. What you mentioned about display settings
intrigues me as I believe that I had previous problems
related to display settings. As to the Notepad programming
instructions, I did as instructed (copying commands into
Notepad, saving it and getting to the C:\ prompt) but I
don't know what command is required to run the notepad
programming (Run?). Could you please instruct. Also, I
subscribe to Norton AV through Live Update and I run
manual scans frequently. No viruses detected, BUT running
scan through trend micros www.antivirus.com reveals FOUR
virus alerts: C:\winnt\system32
\ocxdll.exe "taskmanager.exe*; C:\winnt\system32
\ocxdll.exe *tftp8675*; C:\winnt\system32\taskmanager.exe;
C:\winnt\system32\tftp8675.

Also, of note, is that I am able to access my
desktop\taskbar and apps icons after going to task manager
through Ctrl+Alt+Del >> File >> New Task (Run) >> Windows
Explorer... or "C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\Start
Menu\Programs\Accessories\Windows Explorer.lnk"

Again, thank you for your help.

I wonder if your display settings are completely out of
whack. Have you tried starting your PC in Safe Mode?
(Press F8 during the boot stage, then select Safe Mode
from the menu)

If Safe Mode does not help, try this:

- Start notepad.exe
- Paste these lines into it:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
- Save the file as "c:\Show Desktop.scf"
- Start a Command Prompt
- Enter this command: "c:\Show Desktop.scf"

You should also follow up on your virus suspicion. Get onto
this site: www.antivirus.com, then scan your machine for
viruses. Do you have an up-to-date virus scanner? Here is
how you can start IE6:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

On your machine, iexplore.exe may be located in a different
directory.

Those virus alerts sound alarming. I am a long-time subscriber
to Trend PC-Cillin and so far it has never let me down: If it
reported a virus then there was a virus.

If this was my machine then I would do this:
- Set up the BIOS so that the machine boots from CD
- Boot from your Win2000 CD
- Re-install Win2000 over the top of the existing installation.
This will preserve your existing settings but it will replace
all system files.
- Apply Service Pack 4.

What happens when you do this:

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc
- Select the Applications tab
- Click "New Task"
- Type Explorer and press OK

Furthermore:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc
- Select the Processes tab
- Examine the task list carefully. Can you
see Explorer.exe as one of the tasks?

Thank you for your timely and considered help.
