I am unable to locate the defrag program in XP as it is not in the Windows
folder. Is there an equivalent of the Win 98 System File Checker program in
XP to restore the file.

Hi

If you type the following from Start>Run

dfrg.msc

does the Defrag screen appear?

There are two defrag tools in XP.

dfrg.msc is the pretty one that opens from
Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools.

defrag.exe is the command line tool that runs from the command prompt.

Hi Wes,
I was looking for defrag.exe and not the correct XP one. Only recently
moved over to XP from Win 98 and old habits die hard.
Thanks
Rob

Rob,

You can use both.

Open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
Type:

defrag /?

Hit your Enter key.

As far as I am concerned, defrag.exe is only good for scheduling a defrag.
dfrg.msc has the Graphical User Interface and is neater to watch.

This is not very flashy...

When I run defrag.exe a DOS window comes up then disappears and no defrag
takes place.
Glad I sorted it though as my PC was getting slower and slower.

Rob,

You have to open a command prompt first.

Open a command prompt...

Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |

Then in the command prompt window, type:

defrag /?

Then hit your Enter key to execute the command.

The /? switch shows help for almost any command.

Does typing cmd into Start | Run not do anything or bring up an error?
