No Computers in Workgroup

I'm running win XP professional.

For a little while now (I Think since an autoupdate of
new win xp patches) on my desktop although I login as
normal (user +password) when I go to network neigboorhood
& click on the workgroup ther are no computers listed.
Inclusing the one I am on.

File sharing is installed, TCP/IP (auto via DHCP from
router) windows, client for microsoft networks.

I can ping from my lap top to the desktop and vice versa
but no sharing possible between the two.

My laptop shows itself in the workgroup.

I suspect the problem lies in the fact that my desktop
shows no computers in the workgroup even itself.

Any ideas on why this may be and how to fix?

It can take up to 15 minutes after a computer starts before everything
appears in Network Neighborhood or My Network Places.

To access another computer before that, type the computer's name in
the Start | Run box preceded by two backslashes:

\\computer
