No COM ports?

I have a user with a software modem. Device Manager says the device is
working fine, though it won't even attempt to dial. However, device manager
also shows only LPT1 and no COM ports. Should I find a way to just reinstall
the software modem? BIOS shows nothing related to COM ports so they should
be on.

Software modems are not installed on an actual com port, they are on a
virtual com port, it will not be listed in device manager.

Yeah, but the Device Manager doesn't show any COM ports either, just the LPT
port. I'm gonna get a PCMCIA card for the user and sidestep anything else.
Thanks

Mine have always shown only as a modem in Device Manager, and when you ask
for the Properties of the modem you get the chance to configure the virtual
COM port including which COM number it's on.

Reading can be problem. A virutal com port is not listed in device manager.
What don't you understand?

Try reading my reply again, unless you have actual com ports on the machine,
you will not see any com ports in device manager, even with a software modem
installed.

You still eill have the problem! Since most modems are now "software"
based you need to install some type of "virtual" comm port software in
order for the old "DOS" comm port access.
