No COM ports showing in Device Manager

As the subject says....what is the problem and remedy?
This is in WinXP Home. The only port showing is LPT1.

I thought a few more details of the problem may help get
an answer.
I am working on a Compaq Presario 700 laptop. The main
problem is that when trying to connect to the internet, I
get a message of "...no dial tone". In my search for the
problem, I noticed that in Device Manager there are no
listings for any of the COM ports -- only the LPT1, as I
mentioned.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Have you disabled com port from computers bios? Or is your computer so
advanced that it doesn't have any com ports, only usb ports?
