I am not sure if this question has been asked before but I just recently
bought a new computer with vista preinstalled. I connected my ethernet cable
to my computer and to the phone jack but my computer says that there is no
cable connected to the computer when there is.
I've called the internet company and they said that my internet was working.
My old computer that ran on XP picked it up perfectly.
I have DSL.

Any Help would be awesome.
I've tried everything I could think of.

I am living in the dorms, and yes I did try that. I have no password or
username to use. When I called the internet company we tried this.

DSL internet is run from a separate box if the phone line goes to your
PC you have dial up service

Not necessarily.
Many US DSL telcos use a 'splitter'--one side RJ11 for phone, the other RJ45
for ethernet--all from the same wall socket.

AND use a DSL MODEM/router between the splitter and computer.

This user may be lucky that the designers of 10/100 base T , DO NOT
USE the middle 2 pins of a RJ-45 connector, which would be where a
standard RJ-11 has "Line 1", the standard US phone line. The RJ-11
plug +will+ fit and latch into place in a RJ-45 socket.

I don't know exactly what internt my Dorm uses, but my computer continues to
say that there is no cable connected when there really is.

Not knowing what jack you are plugging into, or how your dorm is
configured does not let anyone in www-land make anything but guesses.
There is only 3 logical choices:
1) contact the network guru in charge of your dorm network.
2) use dial up (using a internal or External MODEM) on a STANDARD
telephone line.
3) forgo computer connectivity until you become computer savey enough
to clearly state your configuration and diagnostic steps attempted.

Hint: #1 is a very good choice. You probably have to PAY for service
activation within the dorm room.

You say you connected an Ethernet cable to the phone jack.
Ethernet connectors don't fit a phone jack. Phone jacks are known
as type RJ-11, while Ethernet jacks are wider and are called RJ-45.
