My wife could not get the c: drive on her laptop. XP Home. The blue
light did not go on. Boot up, showed Windows, and nothing happened. Put
in recovery disk. Machine is fine. Was it necessary to wipe the hard
disk? What could have happened?

Thanks.

There's no way to tell what happened with the limited info provided, the
possibilities are endless. It is likely a knowledgeable person could have
fixed it without a format and reload.

What I want to know is what could possibly happen, so that it looks like the
disk is bad when it really is not. Please tell me some of the possibilities.
Not all from your endless list. I am trying to understand what happens and
what one can do. She could not even get into safe mode.

Thanks.

With the brief description you gave of the problem, a knowledgeable tech
would not have (I know I would not have) made any decision on the hard drive
reliability without first running some diagnostics. Your problem does not
indicate a hard drive failure, troubleshooting must be done to determine the
problem.
Causes could be file system corruption, Windows file corruption, registry
corruption, memory errors, malware, and so on.
