No boot at all ???

I wrote here some time ago. Now my problem's getting even weirder (and
worse).
("A7V333 won't boot at all (nothings working so far)") - 23.03.2004, 15:34

To summarize what's happend up til now:

My PC won't boot (that means, there NOTHING as I pressed the on/off switch)
My MoBo was tested OK by my dealer (twice!). First time I sent it in, was
with my CPU.
CPU was replaced. I reassembled it, NOTHING. Second time, same result.
But my dealer insisted, that my MoBo was tested with XP1700+, HDD, WinXP,
Ram, AGP
and working fine (new conclusion: the replaced CPU might be defecitve)

Btw: I have A7V333, rev 1.02 and XP1800+ (FSB266).

Ok, now I'm assembling a new PC for a collegue. Asus A7V8X-X with XP2400+
(thoroughbred with 266 FSB). Ok, thats a perfect opportunity to test my
hardware.
Here's what I did:

1) I put my CPU (1800+) on the new MoBo and installed it in the new tower
(with one
stick of (new) Ram but no other hardware (i.e. AGP, HDD). My assumption:
If that
won't work, it's even more likely to be the processor. It wasn't
working.

2) I assembled my old MoBo with the new CPU in the new tower. This time with
my old
stick of Ram but no other hardware (AGP, HDD etc.) That should've been
working (so I've guessed). Well, I was wrong. Same thing like all the
time. NOTHING !

Ok, so far I was very disappointed. What more was there to do?

3) I assembled ALL the new hardware (new MoBo, CPU, Ram and this time and
old PCI
VGA Card). This also won't boot. WHAT THE F... IS WRONG HERE ???

I have some ideas and questions:
a) is it possible, that my board is initialized the wrong way or something
(like "still assuming
another CPU the the one installed)? But that would at least boot, or not...
? The green light on both
MoBo's were working. I plugged the power cable and removed the battery. I
will leave this for at least the next 24 hours. Maybe this will help to
"reset" the boards.

b) Should I add more hardware for testing? It should at least boot with cpu
and ram.

Please, SOME suggestions.
Thanks in advance

Is your power supply sufficent?
Are all the conectors from said power supply connected to your mother
board? Sometimes in addition the the main power supply there is a
small 4 pin atx connector that also must be plugged in.
Is the power supply defective?

Hope these help,
Good luck,
Bobsen

Martin, I apologize in advance, but you DID ask for ideas;

Is there any chance that you have an extra stand-off or a screw or some
other conductive trespasser trapped beneath the board(s)?

Also, is there any chance that you are consistently hooking up the case
leads incorrectly? I wonder about this one, because you say the green
lights are there -- which means SOME power is reaching the board -- but
perhaps the ATX circuitry is not activating because of some anomaly with the
wiring.

Lastly (and least likely) is there any chance of a loose/broken connection
in the main power connector [which plugs into the board]? This is the wide
one; about ½" x 2".

HTH
Please let us know, OK?

Hmm,

I tried 3 brand-new power supply's (Enermax 350W, No-Name 300W, No-Name
330W).
Same effect every time.

I also checked the wiring from the case to the board. I tried to switch
power button and reset switch
in case one of them was defective. I also changed the tower case. AND, I
tried to activate my old
MoBo with a jumper directly.

The board was outside the case most of the time (on antic static material of
course).

At least the Enermax Power supply is working in my other PC (Dual P3-450).
So at least this one
should be working. But I consider none of the PU's broken.

The 4-Pin extra power connector is for P-4, so my boards both don't have
that connector. If they had
these, I would've tried that.

Thanks (but still not working)
Martin

Make sure you plug the cpu fan into the proper fan header.
You are testing with a heatsink and fan attached ?

Of course.

Ok, here's the
After I reassembled all the new parts (MoBo with all screws in the new tower
case, Ram, AGP, HDD and
Floppy) and removing the battery for some hours, it started to work.
Installed WinXP, works fine.

Unfortunatly, my own system however does not (did the same, assemlbed it
completely). I think, that may
be another sign for defective CPU.

I'm gonna try my old board with the new cpu (btw: it's the last CPU still
supported by the MoBo, so that shouldn't be the reason) and removing the
battery again. Maybe this will work.
And new CPU couldn't be damaged, because I had it on my old board severeal
times, now it's still working.

Martin

ps: i'll let you know, as soon as I get something to work.

Ok, both the new CPU (2400+) and the old one (XP1800+) are working on the
new MoBo.
But none of the CPU will work with my old board.

I will take out the battery over night, maybe this will help.
