No Automatic Program Update?

First - automatic definitions update work ok.

However, if I do a manual update from File/Check For Updates the latest
program is not downloaded and instead I am told that I have the most recent
program. While I could easily go to the web page and get it, there may be a
problem with some auto-updates. Or, are updates issued on a staggered basis
to reduce Microsoft's system load?

Hi Dick;
I'll cross post the Beta Version: 1.0.701 update announcement that came from
Mike Chan on the Announcements newsgroup, it seems like the only significant
change uncovered so far is to the extended expiration date, so you might want to
wait for the official update early next week.

We have just released a beta refresh for Windows AntiSpyware (build 1.0.701)
onto the download center. This build extends the Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)
expiration date to July 31, 2006.

We will be turning on the software update notification early next week, but
you can download the latest beta refresh manually at :
http://www.microsoft.com/antispyware

For more information, please monitor the Microsoft anti-malware blog at
http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware

Thanks.

Additionally - I don't believe that the File, Check for update process will
ever bring in the new program build--at least, I've never seen that in the
past. There is an automatic process, but it isn't triggerable manually as
far as I can see.

Although the Microsoft AntiSpyware directions indicate that at some point in
the download process there will be an option for me to activate the
automatic-scheduled-update option, there is none. Also, is it better to
select "Run" or "Download" with a security product? - Alice

That should come after the installation, as part of an initial wizard when
the product is first run.

The settings can be changed after the initial install via Options, Settings.

I recommend that you chose to save the download to a known location, and
then run it to install after the download completes.
