Hi,

I am having difficulty getting my Mac client to communicate
with a Windows server remotely.

Here is my situation (G4, OS9.2): I'm running a Cisco 3000 VPN client
to connect to a Windows server remotely in order to have it mount to my
desktop. I've installed the Microsoft Authentication V5.0 UAM into my
Appleshare system folder and restarted. I am able to establish a
connection via VPN. However, when I select Appleshare in the chooser and select
to enter the Server IP Address, I DO NOT get the authentication window
that would give me the choice of "Apple Standard UAM" or "Microsoft
Authentication V5.0". Rather, I am directed to the Name: / Password:
dialog box that has the 8 character limitation for the password (my
password is 9 characters long).

Anyway, is my best option to try to get the password changed or to work
to get the authentication window to come up?

Note :There is something called "Netware UAM" in my Appleshare folder
also. Apparently, this allows me to log in to NetWare servers.

Thanks for any help!

I've dug around a bit more online, and it seems that I may have placed
the MS UAM in the wrong spot? Although the download site for this UAM
indicates to create an Appleshare folder in the System Folder in which
to place the MS UAM, I'm still not getting the two authentication
options (MS UAM, Apple Standard UAM) when I try to log in to the
server (just defaulting to the password dialog box with the 8
character password limit - AS UAM?), so this leads me to believe
that there is an error in the placement of the MS UAM. I've tried
putting it into the Extensions folder where the Appleshare extension
is located, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Please help!

I was able to find a Mac guru off list who pinpointed the problem: the
MS UAM had the word "copy" in the filename, as I had copied it to both
my Previous System Folder and System Folder. This rendered the UAM
unrecognizeable/unreadable, thus causing the authorization option
choice dialog box to not be displayed.
