I have creative desk top speakers and suddenly my sound went i was tidying up all my cables i have double green end jack of which one goes into one of the speakers and the other in to the back of the tower i have done all the usual checks i have realtek ac97 audio the last thing i downloaded was a update of windows live messenger realy annoying can anyone suggest anything else did a system restore to the day before!.

As it happened when you were tidying up the cables it is more than likely going to be a physical problem, such as a loose connection or something hooked up incorrectly. I'd completely disconnect your speakers and then try conning it all back up again :) The speakers normally connect to the green 3.5mm socket on the back of the PC (for basic stereo ones anyway).

If that fails, try to connect them to something like a radio just to make sure they work ok.

Try another set of speakers or try your speakers in a different pc. This will tell you if the problem is the speakers or the pc.

Computers are wierd and wonderful things andd sometimes have a mind of there own..Aswell as doing as Ian sugested, go into your Control Panel and check your sound options in there..Get a set of earphones, say from your iPod or Mp3 player and plug them into the various sound ports around your tower and see if you have any results..

I too encountered the same problem following an automatic Windows update. I went through every possible fix I could think of (in my own non-technical way) including restoring my desktop to a point prior to the update. Did'nt work.

Finally, I logged on as an 'administrator' and went through the motions of downloading the AC97 drivers etc as if for the first time. That worked.

Its a relatively painless process which I hope works for you.
