No audio since upgrading to Windows XP

Prior to upgrading from Windows ME to Windows XP I had
installed AOL 9.0 and I had audio. I kept losing my
connection to AOL and Gateway suggested that I upgrade to
Windows XP rather than purchase more RAM. The upgrade
installation seemed to go OK....was stressful but no
major problems.

Now I have no audio on Real Player or Windows Media
Player and everytime I log in to AOL I get the message
("Unable to find one or more multimedia components needed
for proper operation. Please reinstall AOL"). I have
reinstalled AOL 9.0 but still have no audio. I contacted
AOL and they tell me I have to uninstall 9.0 and
reinstall with a CD which will take 4-6 weeks for me to
receive. I'm a on-line student and need audio for
lectures.

I uninstalled Real Player and reinstalled it but still
have no audio.

I'm not a techie so don't know where the problem is but
think it must be Windows since I have no audio on Real
Player or Windows Media Player.

If you have advice, please be very basic cause I have a
limited vocabulary about computer software, hardware and
IT stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Try downloading the latest drivers for your sound card. Maybe this is the
problem.

When using XP with headset you must choose that option in
the control panel\Sounds and Audio Devices \Volume
tab\Speaker Settings-Advanced button\drop down list at the
bottom. If like me your jack in the front of the tower
does not work for headphones and you have to plug into the
back of your tower directly into the sound card. I used
another technique as constant switching is a pain. I got a
splitter for the back of my tower and have both the
desktop speakers and the headphones plugged into it. Then
I just leave the desktop speakers turned off. You can also
attempt to troble shoot your sound by going start\run and
type in dxdiag and hit enter. This will open the Direct X
diagnostic tools and one of the tabs will be sound. While
this has little bearing on your no sound it may give you
some pointers to your issue. Good luck.

Randon,
First, check to see if sound card drivers are still installed. Go to
Start-Run-type dxdiag OK. Run all tests. If you have problems
reinstall sound card drivers. Then right click My
Computer-Properties-Hardware tab-Device Manager. To use headphones from
front panel CD player, find your CD player, right click it, select
Properties-Properties tab, uncheck Enable digital audio. . . .Next, dump
Real Player and AOL. Win XP should run well with 256 MB memory, no
less.
