i thought everything was installed properly, so i thought i would listen to
an mp3 i have, but whenever i try, i get this error message in media player:

There is no sound card

You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not
functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must
install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you
do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot
the problem.

Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000

but in device manager, the audio drivers seem to be installed (audio codec,
legacy audio drivers etc.)

can anyone help me out?

thanks

ps. thanks again!!

Do you have a sound card fitted or using on board audio? Have you enabled
the jumper on the motherboard? Installed drivers for audio?

i'll check the jumper settings. i got someone else to install the mobo, so
i just assumed he did it.

i don't have a standalone soundcard installed.

There's a jumper labelled "AUDIO_EN" at the edge of the board just
down from the last PCI slot, it should be in position 1-2 (towards the
back of the case) rather than 2-3.

It's disabled because I used a Soundblaster rather than the onboard
audio :-)
