No audio in PP 2007 presentation

Problem: I have inserted a sound file in a slide. The sound is a .wav file,
the size is 3.9 MB, 23 seconds in length. The sound plays correctly the first
time the slide is run but there is no audio with successive attempts to run
the slide, either with preview or slide show. There is no sound when clicking
the Preview button in the Play section of the Sound Tools Options tab either.
When playing the slide in the Custom Animation pane, the timer continues to
run for the 12 seconds or so that it did when the audio was actually playing,
so it "looks" like it should be playing.
Attempted fixes: In Sound Options tab I have tried all the options selected
and deselected in every combination I can think of. Tried Play across slides
and Automatic. I have tried the different slide layouts; deleting and
recreating the slide. Some sound files work correctly (Cheers) and others
don't (Cash Register). Other slides in this presentation have several (4)
sounds that play successively no matter how many times I play the slide or
the presentation. This particular slide only has the one sound. I have tried
converting to a .wma file and linking it, same problem.
Question: What could cause this?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated because this is driving me crazy!

Not sure what you mean by hyperlinking. I can close the presentation. Open it
and run the slide show, no audio for that slide. If I go back to slide 1 and
run slide show, no audio. If I play the slide from the Custom Animations
pane, no audio. If I try to preview the sound from the Play group on the
Sound Options tab, no audio. The audio for the one other slide in the
presentation that contains sounds plays no matter how many times I play it or
click it in the navigation pane. :-(
Any other thoughts?

Austin,
It plays in Windows Media Player. Is that what you mean? The sound plays the
first time I run the slide but not subsequent.

Ah, that is a very different problem than you first stated. When you say it
plays once but not subsequent, do you mean if you return to the side during
the slide show? If so that is normal behavior as PowerPoint returns to the
end of a slides animations. Try navigating to the slide before the one with
the audio and see if it plays as it should when you transisions to it.

Austin,
Sorry if I wasn't clear. Nothing I can do (outside of "cutting" the sound
and reinserting it) will make it play again. If I close PP, reopen it and the
presentation, the sound will not play: not in slide show; clicking Play in
Custom Animation pane; Preview in the Play group of the Sound Options tab;
starting over from slide one and progressing through in the nav pane; or
starting overfrom slide 1 in slide show. Perplexing!
