I installed a chipset update (SIS 7018) and I now have no
sound, no icon in the system tray, and in control panel,
no audio device is available - it is all "greyed out". No
IRQ interrupts in hardware manager. Tried a sys restore,
to no avail.

Any ideas?

Ryan, go to the Motherboard Manufacturer's site and see if they have a
Audio Driver.

Depends what Windows is telling you on the Properties for the hardwar
entry on Device Manager. The updated driver could have caused th
windows registry to alter a legacy entry or there could be anothe
hardware conflict.
I'm having a similar issue myself with the SIS 7018 chipset. I have Le
BN730 Ultra M/board with onboard sound but want to use my SB Live wit
it as well but can't get the 2 to work at the same time. After muc
faffing about the best I can get is for Windows to report a "Code 10
error for the SIS 7018 Audio entry but god knows the exact nature o
this "genericly titled" error code (Thanks Microsoft for being s
vague).
Best advise I can offer is checking any Shared / Conflicting resource
using System Information (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools
System Information) which might show up another device that's sharin
either a memory address range or IRQ, if so try adjusting this fo
either device by booting up into Safe Mode & altering it in Devic
Manager. Or remove the soundcard (if it is a card & not onboard lik
mine) reboot windows & remove any driver / software fiels for th
device (including ones in the windows/inf folder, then shut down ad
the device back in again & windows should pick it up as a PNP devic
again & ask for the up-to-date drivers. Failing all this you might als
have to frig the registry in the HK-LM Hardware or System branches t
tweak / delete the matching entry for the device (by bus / device
function number) but tread carefully!!
Good luck.
