i get this error when i try to boot up a computer that i just swapped mobos
on. what does it mean, the os wont boot up at all

I am just guessing, but does your mobo have RAID? You probably have to
choose which raid (If any) you want before the motherboard can boot.
Assuming you dont want raid you can turn it off.
 
yes it does have raid. but i took it out of a computer that was not set up
for raid and i thought that if i swapped the mobos and kept the
configuration the same i would not have any problems. thanks

You can do one of two things:

1) Plug the drives into the motherboard chipset's controller (if it's
possible, same interface).

2) Enter the RAID bios and define each drive as a single drive span.

Whenever allowing a RAID bios to configure your drives it's wise to
backup the data first, but I do recall successfully retaining data on
a drive that I'd moved and then configured as a single-drive span.

You could instead define each drive as a single drive stripe, but I
think you do need to parittion & format for the stripe config, so you
would loose the data on the drive.
