All right, I give up. I can't find the solution to my problem merely
by searching; I'll have to ask.

I can no longer launch any applications. Every single one of them,
with the exception of Task Manager, starts a process, but hangs at
some point during loading. Some of them get as far as adding a button
to the task bar, but most appear to do nothing at all.
I'm running Service Pack 4. Everything was fine last Friday when I
shut down. I disassembled the machine and moved it to a new house and
plugged it all back in. And now this. The only significant
difference in the setup is that I have no cable modem service at the
new place yet.

Any ideas? I don't even know where to begin.

I suspect your suffering from time-out problems:
Your machine is waiting for a response from some
device. There are at least two solutions:
a) Move back to your old house, or
b) Boot in Safe Mode, then uninstall the driver
for the cable modem.

While in Safe Mode, check the Event Logger.

Thank you for the quick response. I'm not at home, so I can't see if
your suggestion works.

The little icon popped up in the system tray telling me my network
cable was unplugged... would it get that far if the cable modem driver
couldn't be loaded?

And what kinds of things might I expect to find in the Event Log?

I did not say that the cable modem drive could not be loaded; I suggested
that your machine might waste lots of time waiting for an event that will
never happen while the modem is unplugged. To resolve the problem
you would have to uninstall the cable modem driver, or reconnect the
cable modem. Keep in mind that I'm guessing.

Don't know - but this is the first place where you should look when
something goes wrong. All events have a time stamp, so you will
soon see which ones were recorded after you moved.
