We're a new account with EarthLink, and with 11 different
access numbers called, the message "There is no answer at
the number you are dialing" appears EVERY time.
Also, "Unable to establish a connection" appears. We've
tried troubleshooting to eliminate the problem, but we're
about to give up!
You'll need to call Earthlink's tech support on this one. When I was using
dialup, the "no answer" message would come up when the local node
was overloaded with traffic. A pain because the modem would not
automatically redial when the automated message came up.
"Unable to establish a connection" can come up for a variety of reasons:
**Server on other end is slow to respond due to heavy traffic or network
problems. You've already tried alternative numbers with. If you live in a
densely populated area it can take a bit of experimentation to find out
which numbers are usable at different times of the day. Complain to the
ISP if *all* numbers in your area are a problem. They need to add more
numbers to service their customers properly or may know of a new number
that isn't highly trafficked yet.
**Modem configured improperly: Run the diagnostic test on your modem in
Control Panel> Phones and Modem Options. Select your modem on the Modems
page, right click and select Properties. You'll find the diagnostic test in the
screens that come up. If the modem passes this test, the problem is not on
your end.
**Software for ISP: May not be configured correctly or there is some
problem with the installation. ISP tech support should be able to advise
here.
