NIS started blocking POP3 today.

Well, I can't find any appropriate newsgroup for discussing this issue so
this is the closest I can find.

After I ran LiveUpdate today Norton Internet Security 2005 started
blocking access to my ISP's POP3 server. Interestingly, I can still
download e-mail from Gmail via POP3 but you do have to use a different
port for Gmail.

I know the problem is being caused by the Personal Firewall part of NIS
because when I turn this off then the POP3 works just fine. I have double
checked NIS's Manual Program Control configuration for Outlook and it is
definitely set to allow all traffic on all ports.

I can't for the life of me figure out why NIS would be blocking POP3 to
one server but not another while allowing all SMTP traffic to go by.

Hi Grant,
I experienced the same problem on Saturday after a NIS 2005 update on Friday night. The culprit is the AntiSpam portion of NIS. I finally figured it out, and turned it off. Now my email works fine again, even with NIS activated. It's very difficult to report this to Symantec. I can't seem to find an appropriate email address on their site. The AntiSpam portion integrates into your email program and is blacking your POP3 server.

The culprit is the AntiSpam portion of NIS.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried turning that off but I still had
problems. Now I have noticed that SMTP also fails if I am actually
sending a message.

Damn. I have the same problem also. I have to completely disable the NIS in
order to send email and recieve email from my ISP. And it to happened after
a live update. I will try to disable the Norton Anit-spam to see if that
corrects my problem also.
This is going to be a very interesting post.

I have contacted tech support, who responded today with a bunch of hoop jumping suggestions. "Must be a corrupted file download in the LiveUpdate Download Folder, blah, blah, blah". I followed all his steps but it did not fix the problem. I replied to him today with all the steps I took, and included the error message I received.

A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'mail.charter.net', Server: 'pop.charter.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

We'll see what his response is to my email. Now, after following his steps, turning off AntiSpan doesn't work. I too have to disable NIS in order to connect.

Damit all. I get the same error message but with the naming information from
my ISP. So then can we assume the problem is restricted to POP3, or are
certain ISP's just having the problem with symantec. Iam tracking this post
heavily. The outcome is critical.

There is a thread going in symantec.customerservice.general with the
subject: "NIS 2005 update causes Outlook E-mail problems" that covers
this problem well.

Here is a quote from another newsgroup:

after installing the common client updates, you can go to this webpage and
follow the procedures. It worked for me after I installed these previously
trouble causing updates. Hope this is useful to all of you having the same
problem.

Thanks to Claudio Arias (Symantec Product Support Technician).

This worked for me but now I am noticing slow network browsing via
Network Places. The only way I can get that back to normal is to set the
Personal Firewall slider to LOW on all PC's on the network.

Iam back up and running since about 10 mins ago after doing a live update
for the latest security threat released by symantec.

Thanks. Getting ready to track that one now.
I was a Norton fan for years. However, I started having troubles with my
email and SpamKiller. I uninstalled Norton's Internet Security 2005, and
installed Trend Micro's PC-Cillin Internet Security Suite 2005. Now I
have no problems.
