I have Norton Internet Security 2005.

The activation won't "stick." I activate it. It works for awhile, then
it says the "trial period" has ended.

I bought the software at a store in a box. It is not "trial software."

Thanks.

don't you have to register it?

I "activated" it with the special code they give on the CD sleeve. It
is done with an IP connection.

Isn't registration something you do if you want to get junk mail?

Sounds like NIS came pre-installed on your computer as part of all that
software fluff the sellers want to toss at newbies to make them think
they are getting a great deal (because of all the included software).
You cannot install NIS atop its trial version. You need to uninstall
the trial version and then install the retail version. If you have
already install the retail version atop the trial version, you will
need to uninstall the retail version, uninstall the trial version (if
any entries for it still exist in Add/Remove Programs), and then run the
RNIS.exe utility you get from Symantec's support site to perform a
cleanup of any remnant files and registry entries. Then install the
retail version again.

Of course, since you just bought the retail version of NIS, you could
call Symantec or use their online webform for tech requests (they answer
within 3 business days).

I've seen that bug before, and there is a fix/download for it on the
www.symantec.com website. Search for activation in the support part
of the website.
