Nikonscan 3.1.2 & XP - occasional crashing

Hi all,

I am using a Nikon LS-2000 scanner and SF200 multi-slide adaptor to
scan a few thousand slides. Having got through the first box over the
weekend (300) I have noticed that Nikonscan 3.1.2 crashes often -
normally when loading a new slide. This happens intermittently but can
happen as much as 7 times for each batch of 50 slides.

While it is not too much trouble to restart, it does not allow for true
'unattended' scanning, which is the only way I am going to get through
this process!

Before I go and spend some money on VueScan (in the hope that this will
not do the same), can anyone tell me if they have had similar problems,
and if there is a solution?

I am running XP SP2.

BTW, so far I have had NOT ONE jammed slide with the SF200. which I
read many reports of here. I am using plastic Agfa mounts & have added
the credit-card to prevent more than one slide being loaded at once.

Thanks,

C

Don't bother with Vuescan if Nikon Scan is giving you what you want.
Didn't know the SF 200 was compatible with the LS 2000.

When I started scanning with my LS-5000 and an SF-200 I had problems
with occasional crashes plus it was almost always confused about how
many slides to scan. Then over Xmas I ended up reformatting C: and
reloading XP-SP2, and lo! The problems went away. It stopped crashing
and the slide count problem seems to have gone as well.

I can only think it's something odd in the registry, but if you can live
with it I'd suggest that rather than forking out for different software
and/or reloading XP.

BTW here is a link for compatibility between Nikon scanners &
accessories:

I've had NikonScan crash, but not all that often. It is easily
confused and I'd be careful about running other USB devices at the
same time. OTOH I've run both my HP 5470c flatbed and the LS5000
successfully the same time. (different USB controllers though even
though they are on the same machine)

There just ain't no such thing as "unattended" when using the
autofeeder. There is luck, or the lack there of though.

I run NikonScan with the LS5000/SF210. It may run and run and run for
days and then it may crash.

Some report reloading XP fixes the problem. I've had it on several
machines and after several installs. Some times it do and some times
it don't.

The SF200 and 210 work well most of the time credit card or not. If
you have plastic mounts and no jamming it'll probably continue to work
well. I run many types of mounts including the old Kodachrome card
board mounts so I don't dare turn my back on it.

As for VueScan it seems to work well and I've never had it crash. But
there are some things it does not handle well and it does have a
steeper learning curve than NikonScan.
