Nikon with VueScan?

I have a "Nikon CoolScan IV ED" and a computer with rack mounted hard
drives which I swap between W2000Pro (early version with no upgrades) or
W98SE (also lacking some of the latest upgrades that give M'soft access to
my computer) ..... and sometimes DOS :-)

Dual boot is too much of a nuisance for me to set up.

I am thinking of trying other scanner software and am interested to know
if VueScan has all the necessary drivers, etc., for SIMPLE installation
and setup? ..... and operation?

I am not highly skilled at debugging - to the point where the cost is the
only thing that stops me from buying a Mac to use for the things that
require too much fiddling and tweaking in a Windows system. :-)

Any thoughts on ease of VueScan install / setup anyone?

As I remember, dual boot pretty much sets itself up, no nuisance
whatsoever.

At any rate, Vuescan is an executable with mimimal system impact; it
doesn't even make registry entries, IIRC. You can download the demo and
see for yourself.

Dual boot is easy if you are installing Windows XP as the second boot.
Format the hard drive and partition for two systems, install first system
(Win98se) then install Windows XP.

Thanks to those who responded here ..... and also to the thread that had a
bit of a cat fight on the relative merits of VueScan vs. Nikon Scan and
other OEM software (eg. Sliverfast).

I will follow the most common, and most common sense recommendation
(download it and try it) while keeping in mind the comments about a steep
learning curve for a novice. :-)

Great newsgroup, even with the "differences of opinion" .... or maybe, in
some ways, because of them?

Yes it does! The registration number is stored in the registry.

In order not to start another cat fight I'll keep my VueScan hiss to
myself... ;o)

The only thing is, do expect "unusual behavior" but don't rush to
blame that on your novice status! The cause is usually elsewhere, so
ask here. There are several knowledgeable VueScan sufferers... erm...
users, who are more than willing to help!

Not only that but segregating OSes on different drives is a much
cleaner solution with no danger of one OS clobbering another. IMHO,
dual boot is just asking for trouble.

I love removable hard drives! I had 4 different OSes on my desktop and
2 on my notebook (3rd one on the way). I just love the ability to give
my computer an instant "brain transplant".
