Nikon Scan Strip Film Offset Nightmare

Hello and welcome to my nightmare.
When I scanned the first 5 films of strips with my new Coolscan 5000ED
and Nikon Scan the offset worked like a charm. It worked so perfectly
that I could set a specific crop and every frame would exactly match
that crop.

Now I am having a nightmare, when I load thumbnails they look okay,
but on the preview alot of the slide is outside of the preview area.
How do I go about this? Ive tried calibrating the scanner but that
doesnt do anything at all. According to Nikon Scan it is supposed to
calibrate itself every time a new strip is inserted. But that is
certainly not the case for me anymore.

Anyone knows if there is a solution to these offset troubles? I am
using Nikon Scan 4.0.0

ARGH!!1 *pulling his dreads realising he cant rip them off*

There is an update from NS4.0.0 to NS4.02 available on the Nikon web
site as of yesterday which specifically addresses this issue. Having
said that, I found that NS4.01 was considerably better at finding the
frame edge than NS3.1.2, but the amount of manual adjustment had been
reduced and this was just a little too tight for when it didn't work
properly.

Have you set the preview default to a large offset or zoom? You may
need to reset the zoom (the "-" magnifier icon) or re-adjust the offset
in Scanner Extras and save the new setting as your default.

yeah! Indeed, the Nikon Scan 4 is just as miserable with
thumbnails as Nikon Scan 3 was... Take a look at

This is a very old nightmare with these thumbnails, but how
can you move a klotz, how can you convince arrogance at Nikon
to fix it!

They get one "Best of the best" award after another,
what do they care about "a few" disgruntled customers.
Test specialists, best on the planet, attest them in
all possible "test reports" how good and perfect they
are. *We* must be wrong! *We* cannot do it right. :-)

but Storm appears to have a different problem from anything that you
have reported. Specifically, Storms thumbnails look OK (whereas in your
problems the thumbnails themselves are offset) and there is an offset
between the thumbnail position and the preview, such that the preview
window is not displaying all of the image. This would appear to be a
setup issue rather than the frame position bug that has been a problem
with first/last frames which have been cut tightly on the film strip.

I noticed a similar thing with an LS-4000/NS3 when I try to scan negatives
as slides. Thumbnails are often okay, preview is way off. It looks as if
NS recomputes the frame boundary during the first preview of a frame and
forgets to update the thumbnails.

Hmm, I understand, you are correct, its a different problem.
Well, I am lucky that *my* NikonScan does this right for a change! :-)

As I suggested to Storm, you should look at the recent NS4.02 release,
which claims to have resolved the problem that you show on your web
site. Although it is too early to say whether the issue is completely
fixed, my initial tests show that it is much more successful in placing
the first and last frames of film strips than previous versions, even on
exceedingly underexposed strips where I would expect, and have
previously experienced, problems.

Good hint, thanks. By coincidence I just downloaded NS4 on June 8
and the 4.02 was not yet posted on that day! I would not have
discovered this update for a while...
