Nikon LS5000 compatible with old SF-200 feeder?

I've seen a few messages suggesting that the old Nikon SF-200 auto
slide feeder can be used with the new LS5000 scanner. Can anyone
confirm this from actual experience or an "authentic" information
source? (I wouldn't mine buying the new scanner, but I am NOT going
to spend $500 on another piece of overpriced plastic that works when
it feels like it--but is really useful nonetheless.)

They are running around $340 to $345. I think I paid around $345
about a month ago.
The SF 210 works very well, but you have to be careful with the old
paper mounts that need conditioning so they don't hang.
Whether the 200 would work with the LS 5000ED, I have no idea.

The plastic mounts they say won't work, do just fine if you turn them
over. That means you have to rotate the image, but it's still a lot
faster than having to feed each slide.

Since I share your refusal concerning that piece of overpriced plastic
I was very happy to read on www.filmscanner.info (a german film
scanner review site with online shop, scanner service, etc) that
Patrick Wagner (owner of that web site) says the ls 5000 is compatible
with the sf-200 and works without any problems.

I have not tried it myself, but Patrick Wagner is a authentic
information source. I actually wait for a good opportunity to buy the
old feeder for my new ls 5000.

kind regards

Hi,

German info only, but tested and verified:

http://www.filmscanner.info/NikonSuperCoolscan5000ED.html

(part of it:)

Filmrollen bereitete keine Probleme.
So (in very short translation) : you CAN USE the Nikon ED 5000 without
larger problems with your "old" Feeder SF-200(S).
In addition, also the other "old" filmholders work without problems with new
NIKON ED 5000
It has been tested at these fine German Scanner-Shop.

Hope to help:

What kind of conditioning? Maybe that's been what I've been missing with my
200.

I just got the LS-5000 and it does work with my old SF-200...

(though I'm having a problem with my LS-5000 scans in general--see new
post).

You chopped a bit much there, but I think I may have been the one to
make the post.

I smooth the edges of the old paper mounts as they develop lips and
high spots. Some of the professional copy labs actually use a press.
They stack the slides in a holder and then apply pressure in a "face
on" direction, flattening out those high spots. Even using the back of
the thumbnail can work wonders.

It won't eliminate all hangs, but it sure does improve things.

Yes, you nailed my thoughts exactly.

Gonna try that next time I have a batch of 30-year old home-made slides to scan.

Thanks.

Okay, that's one user and one reputable source who say it works.
I'm convinced now, so thanks for everyone who responded. Incidentally,
my SF-200 is working pretty reliably (for a couple of hundred scans
anyway) since the third version of the "credit card" fix--my first
two pieces of plastic were too flexible. The only problem I stil have
with it is that cardboard mounts with square corners sometimes snag
something on the way in.

Sorry this is so long after the original post.

I found the following on the Nikon site which answers *all* Nikon scanner accessory compatibility questions. Sorry for the incredibly long URL as well.
