is it better to use the nikon scanner 5000 software, vuescan or open
images in photoshop?
The first two options (Vuescan vs. NikonScan) may be
reasonably debated, but I don't know what you mean
by "open images in Photoshop."
One way or another you need a scanner driver, and
either NikonScan or Vuescan will do the job. It's
somewhat a matter of personal preference.
NikonScan has the option of being used as a TWAIN
driver, which Vuescan does not. Is that what you
mean by "open images in Photoshop?"
A TWAIN driver operates within a standard image
editing application (eg. Photoshop) and lets you
"import" the images into that application directly.
The alternative is what Vuescan does, which is to
save the image to a file (usually TIF or JPG) and
then open that file later in your image editor.
In terms of image quality there is no difference
between these two approaches, and some
scanner drivers (eg. NikonScan) offer both.
If you're looking for an exhaustive comparison of
Nikonscan vs. Vuescan, I'll defer to someone else
or the USENET archives. I own both, but generally
prefer NikonScan's interface. There are many
devoted fans of Vuescan on this NG.
