I recently purchased a used 4000ed from an online vendor. When UPS got
done delivering it to me it was apparent the package had been handled
roughly and/or dropped. The vendor said it was in first class shape
when he shipped it insured and I'm confident that is so. My question -
it seems to make excellent scans but when it completes autofocus and
goes into the preview scan mode for the one or two cycles it kind of
chatters when scanning. The final scan sounds very much like a flatbed
sounds. My question to 4000 owners is do your machines sound like that?
Can't find one local so I have no basis of comparison.
TIA, RJ

I think you can probably relax. The LS-4000ed does indeed make some
strange sounding noises that don't sound very healthy in preparation for
the scan. When it was first introduced, there were lots of posts here
and on other forums from owners asking if their scanner was faulty.

For example, see this thread from August 2001:

The 5000 ED makes a similar noise - sounds like the teeth are being stripped
off the gears!

I own both the 4000 and the LS-40. The 4000 sounds and though it is
going to self-destruct every time I use it. The LS-40 is whisper quiet
by comparison. Maybe Nikon built a few quiet 4000s as well, but noise
(awful and plentiful) seems to be the norm.
