Nick name?

(I'm not really certain what to call this problem!)

I just set up a new system (operating system - XP).

During the set up I must have used a nick name at some point, not thinking
that it mattered .. but now, if I go to upload files to business sites, the
file path shows as C: documents and setting/nick name/ file name….

Since I don’t know where I entered the ‘nick name’ I don’t know where to go
to change it to something more generic .. can anyone help me?

Copy a User Profile:

Open System in Control Panel. On the User Profiles tab, and under Profiles stored on this computer, click the user profile you want to copy, and then click Copy To.

In the Copy To dialog box, under Copy profile to, type the location for the new profile, or click Browse to select the path.
Click Change to open the Choose User dialog box, click a new user from the Names list, and then click Add. The new user name will appear in Add Name. Click OK to add the user as a new user profile on your computer.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to the local computer to copy user profiles. To open a Control Panel item, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the appropriate icon.

Set up a new user account with the name you want

Copy all files you need from old account to new one

Delete old account that has the "nick name"

If you cannot access the old account from the new to copy them then
you will have to "take ownership" of them. See here:-

thank you Doug Knox MS-MVP ... the only difficulty I had with this is that I
only have one account so, as far as I understand it, I must be logged into it
to be using the pc .. but "You cannot copy to or from the account you are
actively logged into" .. so I can't change the name

this was very easy to follow, thank you Rich

I changed the user account name, re-saved a file to test and restared the pc.

Although the user account name remained changed (correctly), the file path
still shows the nick name .. if I look at the file properties and the
location it is still c: documents and settings/nickname.....
have I missed something?

You need to log onto the built in Administrator account, or create another Administrator level account to use for the operation.

Doug .. thank you
