NIC initialization problem

Hi -- searched without luck:

Vista Home Premium, ASUS M2N32 SLI motherboard.

More than 50% of the time which my machine boots, it will not automatically
establish a connection to the Internet (access is via a Dlink router and a
cable modem). The tray icon has as red x, nut no error messages pop up when
the mouse passes over. The fix is to open Device Manager, uninstall the NIC,
and let Vista automatically reinstall the NIC driver -- works everytime to
connect.

The questions are: Why is my NIC failing to initialize? and more
importantly: What can I do to fix it?

Thanks for any suggestions!
Mark

DMark,

One other approach, when the problem occurs, is to right click the NIC icon
in task try and select Diagnose and Repair, rather than uninstalling in
Device Manager. You may even get some indication of what the problem is. I
don't know what indication you may get, as my NIC has always connected.

I have same problem diagnose doesnt work because it says driver not installed
it then installs driver Im up to driver installation #7

Mark and wildrex,

Look into the possibility that updated NIC drivers are available. If you
find any, download and install them. You never know, you could find a fix.

Also, if you haven't already done so, download and install all the updates
available at the Microsoft update website. Sometimes you can get a fix this
way.

Thanks, but I already tried the basics -- I was looking here to see whether
there is a known Vista-related issue and/or fix.

Mark N.,

Sometimes the problem is with the configuration in the modem/router and not
with the operating system. Is there a forum for your brand of modem/router?
If so, you might post your issue there to see what you get. Also, check the
configuration settings in the Properties of your card in Control Panel,
Network and Sharing Center. Just some more basics to check.
