NFSU stutters badly in 800x600

I know my system is not very fast. I'm on Duron1.4ghz, 512 pc133, Radeon
8500le 64mb, agp 4x and win xp.
With my old Geforce2 pro 64mb, i could play the game in 800x600 with
low-medium detail (world detail to lowest), however, this Radeon8500 can't
even play smoothly in those same settings?! Game stutters unless i turn
"geometry detail, reflection update and detail, to complete off" this is
even lower than with old Gf2! I'm not using light blur or motion blur.

I'm using catalyst 3.10, everything to default. Any ideas? Any changes in
drivers maybe?
Or is NfsU optimized for nvidiot cards?
 
This might seem quite strange. I changed resolution to 1024x768x32, thinking
how bad could it get from where i was. Surprisingly, i think the game
actually speed up a little. It does stutters but runs much smoother than
before.
However, should i enable tripple buffering? Also w-buffer?
