In terms of dependability, value, and support, which is the best way to go,with
one of the major companies like Dell or HP,or have it built at a local
shop?My current system is a Compaq, which has been trouble free, but so loaded
with proprietary hardware it's impossible to upgrade. Many of the deals
offered by the large companies look good until you look at things like the
graphics card and audio, being a game player this is important.I'm
considering something in the P4 3.0 area,a mb with HT,a good,powerful psu,a
mid range FX or Radeon card that will handle any game easily, and an Audigy 2
audio.

There is no black and white answer, because it really depends
on how good the local shop is and we cant say on that.

The worst of the local shops are much worse.

The name brand stuff can be a hassle
to upgrade tho, particularly the HP stuff.

And thats true of most HPs too.

Yep, they arent very suitable if you are fussy about that stuff.

You'd be better with a local shop if you can find a good one.

Find a high quality local shop thru recommendations. You'll get better
quality parts, and they are more easily and cheaply replaceable for the
future.

I agree,
my brother bought a Dell and most of the components are Dell only.
We tried to add a DVD drive and because of the case design, ended up using a
Dremel to widen the front panel slot. Why do they make these cases
indestructible?
Buy a Dell if you know exactly what you want, otherwise, a small shop with a
good rep should be your next bet.

Mike,

Peeps here give nice feedback, I'd go for built computer instead of dell or
compaq instead. But before you head out to Britannia, take a look at this
:) If I had the money, I'd go for one. But then again.. maybe an iMac for
the living room, and some Antec's with side panels.. ~dreaming away.

Sigh!If only I could! But I figure it would take $1600.00 at least for their
cheapest P4 system.A bit rich for my wallet.

Same here. But have you ever thinking about getting a job there and get
discounts? Man..

If you can't find a reputable local shop that builds game PCs try a company that specializes in game PCs e.g. Alienware.
