Last month a person install windows XP pro on my PC. I later found out it was
not a legal install as i can not validate it.

I have now purchased a new disk.

My question is can i install the new OS without deleting any other programs
on my machine already, if so how

Thanks

Perform a Repair Install. It would be smart to back up your data first
because Stuff Happens.

thanks for that speedy reply. I tried to follow your good step by step
instructions but fell at the first hurdle, as My machine could not find the
file to delete

del /a /f %windir%\system32\undo_guimode.txt

i tried to change the validation code but my brand new one sent by MS on my
OEM version would not be accepted, on all the options.

i there for think it is a case of a fresh install i'm i right?

You have to do the Repair Install with the exact same version of XP that
is installed. Most pirated copies of XP are XP Pro. If you have a legal
XP Home, you would need to do a clean install.

Are these the instructions you followed?

Ways to retrieve data:

1. Use a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to transfer the data.
2. Use an external hard drive, either usb or firewire.
3. Set up a network to another computer directly using crossover
ethernet cable.

I think either #1 or #2 are easier solutions.

Why not fix the laptop's cd drive and put a burner in?

might do that after i set up a workgroup network and repaired my Machine.
