Newtwork connection slows as day goes on

We are using a crossover cable and Windows XP Home Edition to connect 2
PC's. We share an Access data Point of Sale program.

When we first start out the client is just a little slower than the server.
As the day goes on the client gets slower and slower to the point we cannot
wait on customers.

These are new Dell 4500, 1.8 gig PC's. The server has 512meg ram and the
client has 256. They seem to be networked properly.

Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

Does removing one computer at a time to see which one
might be causing the problem help?

Thanks for responding.

We only have the two connected, but the one we use as the server seems to be
the one causing the slowdown. The reason I say this is when we reboot the
client it doesn't make a difference, but when we reboot the server then it
works OK for a while, then starts to slow way down again.

Do a virus scan and spyware scan on both computers.
