Hi

I've just installed Outlook 2003 which has nice groupware features but I am
told it relies on good old / bad old Outlook Express for newsreader
functionality.

I read in a discussion forum that it is best not to bother with Outlook
Express 'if you're seriously into news'.

What with all the security updates for Outlook Express, are these only
relevant to email or should I be security conscious about newsreader
software also?

I.e. could a feature rich but lesser known newsreader be more trouble than
it's worth security wise.

TIA Prem

The security fixes for MS OE exist for both email and news reader. It has to do with HTML
and other cooperative properties.

I use Forte' Agent Newsreader, have done for many years, there is a
free version.
This is a text based newsreader, but there are many other programs out
there

Several freeware newsreaders are available and often discussed on
alt.comp.freeware. My favorite that I've been using for years is Free
Agent. The payware version, Agent, has email as well. Text-only but
very nice IMO.

If you prefer something that handles html, I think the news and email
apps included with the Mozilla browser are ok. Actually, Mozilla is a
excellent choice for browsing, email and newsgroups. Just download
that and be done with it :)

I was hit by a virus when using Outlook Express as a news reader.

Then, I switched to Xnews (http://xnews.newsguy.com/) and have been
trouble-free ever since.

I keep hearing that kind of stuff too. Mostly people love to bash Microsoft.
I have ( and still do ) tried many others. None do what *I* want any better
than OE. Netscape and any Mozilla based engines are buggy, although the
latest seems not too bad, it is bloatware, but I use it on my Linux machine
for news and Pine for email.
I just downloaded Micro Gravity, a new reader I want to try.

Good luck,

BTW, all software has holes but Microsoft is a bigger target so using
something else will make you a smaller target, although the latest Swen will
infect the computers of anyone running Windows and who opens the attachment.

Agreed. I have been using Mozilla for over a year now and have found it
to be an Excellent alternative for all my browsing, email and newsgroup
needs. It may not have all the newsgroup functions as Agent but for
general usage it is brilliant. Some people have said that can be buggy
but personally I haven't had a problem with it yet. If anything I've
found it to be as solid as a rock. If anything it's a free download so
by all means download it and give it a try :-)

Cheers

Pan is also a very nice free newsreader. Check it out at

Windows Version is available.

Just tried the Windows binary, but it just won't run... Have
submitted bug report.

Cheers

I just tried it, and with a bit of tinkering, it looks like it's gonna
work. You have to have that GTK runtime installed first.

I had to make a separate user-agent line in order to omit the comment,
is there a way to edit it within the preferences other than how I did it?
I'm far more familiar with Agent, but then I've only had Pan for less than
an hour.

You need GTK tools installed. Personally, I feel PAN is a Linux clone
of Microplanet Gravity. I use both as I dualboot Linux before any Linux
zealots start. Microplanet Gravity is now freeware.

I use pan on linux.

I just wish the bozo/spam filters would work reliably.
After adding a few it stops working and I have to wipe out all the
filters. Wildcard (regular expression) filters seem to botch up the whole
filter system.

I use pan on linux.

Interesting how things have come full circle, so to speak. Used to be when
there were more nifty appz written for windows, a windows emulator (WINE)
was written to play them on linux. Now the unix oriented PAN is available
to windows users via the linux emulator (LINE) or GTK-runtime as it's
called.
