I appreciate in advance that my question is a general one and not directly
related to Windows XP but I cannot find a relevant NG to place this query.

When I subscribe to new Newsgroup all headers and/or messages submitted from
the end of May 2004 are downloaded. Can anyone tell me are these messages
cleared regularly and, if so, on what basis?

The answer depends on what server you download from and what
newsgroup it is. Each server sets its own rules.

However, regardless of what's kept on your server, you can clear
whatever you want on your computer.
