newsgroup settings for productivity

I'm a new Vista/Windows Mail user(1 wk.).

1. I want to preview before downloading, combining and decoding a
large multi-part binary (jpg,mpeg, wmv, ect.) message. This was
possible in OE by getting the first message part and opening the
attachment. Settings for Windows Mail?

2. I want to select the messages I read. When opening a Newsgroup
folder, Windows Mail starts downloading a message immediately -
most recent, next unread, or seemingly at random. Am I missing
a configuration that will prevent this?

3. I'm using a modified theme. Is there a look and feel setting to
make the news message icons clearer and more visible?

You can only do that for files that don't need to be complete.
For instance... you can view a partial WMV file but not a partial AVI.

Try again but also note that files that have been zipped or Enc'd
also need all parts to be downloaded before they can be viewed.

You can't look at something until it is downloaded.

You can't do this with Windows Mail

This is a matter of individual preference. You could also decrease screen
resolution to make them bigger.

Aw Shucks, thanks for the info.
As for #1, on my previous machine with IE-7 and OE,
if part 1 of a multipart message was downloaded, the
attachment icon would appear in the preview pane
header which when clicked would play that first part
of the file in Windows Media Player for a multipart .mpg
or .wmv movie clip or "usually" display that part of a .jpg
in the preview pane. If the file was junk, you could move
on without spending the time downloading and combining
the entire file. There was a set of OE properties and
settings that allowed this effective "preview". Unfortunately
the old machine conked out, and I can't presently compare
the old OE configuration with the new Windows Mail options.
It saved a ton of bandwidth consumption and time.

As for #2, that seems a little unsecure.

So far, I haven't found the proper setting. In SeaMonkey, it's
View | Display Attachments Inline

Do not send mail.


It was simple to stop the downloading of unwanted messages -
just uncheck the Automatically download messages when viewing
in the Preview Pane in the Read tab of Options.
But the after selecting a message, the Preview Pane displays the
options of click here or hit space to get the message, it works
but to be knit-pickey I've already selected the message, then I
must do more stuff. Seems redundant.

That option only affects news posts.
 
VLC allows you to preview partial downloaded avi files.'it simply asks if you want to rebuild the index.usually answering NO will allow the file to be previewed. if not then copy the partial to a different open with vlc again and answer YES to rebuild index.

After a Wikipedia session, VLC sounds intriguing. I'll file it away for future reference.
But really, I was only looking for a pointer to configure Windows Mail to perform
in the way I was accustomed to using Outlook Express for years.
