The latest version of Avast AV, version 4.6, has newsgroup
scanning....inbound and outbound. Which other AV programs have this
feature?

Very few if any at all.

And a pointless feature that is too...

About the only thing it's protecting is OE and other clients that use
the "explotable" security holes in MS products. Even then your system
/should/ (things being reliable) be protected by the Standard Sheild.

I guess scanning newgroups (NNTP) at the winsock level is only
advantageous if you use Outlook express to read your news. Any
'decent' newsgroup reader renders the news as plain text and if binary
files are downloaded they are saved to disk first and detected by
on-access scanners. When you think about it like this what else is
there to scan that would justify an additional module?

AVG and Zone Alarm both look at items that I download from newsgroups.
