A question for anyone that can answer this....When I open windows mail and
look at the newsgroups it shows how many posts I believe are downloaded to
my computer...If I delete them why does it still show the same amount and am
I really deleting them ??...Are all these posts actually on my hard drive
???? If I am not really deleting them how do I ??

As noted in an earlier reply, you cannot delete them from the server.

However, if you have elected to download them to disk, those posts can
be purged. See HELP & SUPPORT for more info.

And, in Windows Mail, look under the TOOLS|OPTIONS menu. Click the
ADVANCED tab, then MAINTENANCE.

Thanks for the responses...I thought I had looked for the answer but
obviously not well enough....

You are not able to delete them from the server where they are stored

However... you can cancel your own messages providing you
do it with the same Id.

Sometimes.
It depends on the server.

ok. On mine, news.btinternet.com, it does.

BTW... when I send a post to my server presumably it is then propagated
across all servers
on the NNTP network. If I cancel a message successfully does your point
(above) mean
that the post could still remain on other servers across usenet, or that
if my server accepts cancel the message is wiped across the board?

there are 2 numbers
number of messages
number of UNREAD messages.
verify which one you are seeing.

one number in blue..currently (13427) for windows mail....number varies depending on which newsgroup for instance.....Vista games (399)...Vista perf and maint (3445)..Vista general (34023) and so on...no other numbers show that I see

That's the number of messages not marked as read, whether they are on your
machine or the server. It is only an estimate based on message IDs.

Thanks Frank...Now how do I find out whether they are actually on my machine
or not....I open windows mail and go to Microsoft communities and there they
are,,But are they on my machine or am I looking at something on the server
??

Go to File | Work offline and that will disconnect you from the internet for
WinMail and then you will be prompted to download what is not on the
computer.
