I have noticed about more than half of you in the group
have complaints about the MS Updates.I have had these
problems in the past too. The best way to install the
updates is to install them in small portions 2-3 updates
at a time. DO NOT install SP1 first. Here is how to
successfully install your updates:

1.) Run your scan and then select the Critical updates
and Service packs section.

2) Do NOT install all of them at once Most of your
commercial machines cant handle the load.

3) Select 2-4 critical for download at one time and then
download and install them; and here is what your missing
reboot and DEFRAG every other download.Do NOT mix Updates

4.) After you have completed the critical updates Leave
the SP1 alone!!! Go to the WINDOWS XP section and only
install what is needed for your PC Don't install things
you do not need some of these updates carry a heavy
memory load which the average machine does not have.(slow
PC)Install in 2-4 sections at a time and reboot and
defrag.

5) Go to the driver updates if any and install them 1 at
a time. Drivers tend to load funny when there are more
than one being installed.

6)If you feel you need to install SP1 after all dates are
installed you may do so now. But always select ARCHIVE
the settings it will enable you to uninstall the SP1 if
you see it causes a problem. I Personally have not liked
it so I have left it on Windows Updates By By SP1!

I know this sounds lenghtly but If you follow this
process you wont be on the boards posting you could be
doing something else.

Thanks gang you have helped me before just trying to pay
it forward

What is sp1? I see the update notice telling me of
updates and i install them some ask me to reboot and
other don't. I don't have a clue what I am updating i
took it that Microsoft must know it is important or they
wouldn't have sent it to me. Am i wrong. How should i go
about it to identify that my system is up to date.

SP1 is a service pack containing a lot of information for
the OS (Operating System)> XP is an OS. Ok these service
packs are usually released after a significant amount of
reports get back or reported to Microsoft. They compile
the data and decide what is needed and group it together
in a service pack. Think of it as things that never made
the release date of the OS and intended improvements. The
problem with Service packs is that they can contain
information for the PC that is not neccessary. On many
occasions the SP's are good and very useful.XP's service
pack has some issues I feel at this time because of
legalities that have beset Microsoft. As for what you
will need and not need: Lets make a small check list:

1) for a new user I wouldnt recommend turning on Auto
updates. This is confusing. So play around and get
comfortable. Then update as you understand more.

2)Do you have a network? If no, then do not DownLoad
network updates. Unless they pertain to remote assistance
or Web connections For XP Pro.

3)Do you have cd rom Problems?

4) Do any of the updates pertain to what you might be
experiencing on your Machine?

5) Do you build and compile programs? if no, Then net
framework wouldn't be for you.
6) If you dont know at least download the security
updates they focus more on these than the other updates.

The key for these updates is to supply an update
applicable fix or your PC or security issues.Think of it
like this You wouldnt go into a supermarket and buy out
the whole store;you get what you need and go.Too many of
us are in a rush and dont take the time to read about it
and some of us PC junkies will try anything sometimes to
a fault.
XP Rocks if you take the time to learn.Dont fool yourself
it is the best OS I ever used!
