Newsgroup checker?

I'm looking for a program that runs in the background from the system tray,
and can check specified newsgroup threads and show a popup when a new
message gets posted in that thread. I'm not after a news reader - as I'm
happy using outlook express - I just want a notify program.

You can do that with Outlook Express to a certain extent. Make the news
account check for new messages automatically by going to the server
properties and checking the "Include this account when checking for new
messages" setting. Next make whatever thread you want watched and
whenever OE checks for new messages it will make that newsgroup colored
in the treeview/dropdown if there is a reply to the watched thread.

I hope you understand what I mean. If not I'll explain further with
directions.

I can't believe I missed that option! That's exactly what I wanted - I just
didn't think that outlook express supported it. I'll pay a visit to the
optician at lunch! :o)
