NewsGroup - Can't connect to server

I have tried to follow instructions on setting up News Groups. Am using
Vista Home Premium & Windows Mail.
The MS Communities folder is listed. When I try to use the reset list I get
an error that says unable to connect to server. I can not download or open
the newsgroups to subscribe to any. The info in the Tools/Acounts/MS
Communites/Properties seems to be correct.
I have the trial version of Norton Suite that came installed with this new
computer running.
Any helpful information would be appreciated.

I tried setting up the newsgroup from instructions on setting it up for
Outlook, which was advice given in another post.

Thank you DGuess, but I did set up the news account. Part of the
instructions is setting up the account. "The info in the Tools/Acounts/MS
Communites/Properties seems to be correct." I don't think I could check the
properties if the account were not set up?

Rather than uninstall this is what I did (And now have the news groups I want)

Norton Protection Center
Internet Security Tab
Settings
Internet Security and Firewall Options
Firewall Processing
-Uncheck Automatically decide what to do
-Changed setting to Ask me what to do
After making that change, the server connected. I then clicked on
Tools/News Groups and they were all listed and I could subscribe.

Thanks for all replies :)

That's what I don't see in the info you provided. You only mentioned having
the default Communities and during the beta, I saw some problems with it
and had to create the account manually instead of using the supplied one.

Don't see in the info or didn't see in the info? The part I put in
parenthesis "The info in the Tools/Acounts/MSCommunites/Properties seems to
be correct." was copied from my original post. I don't think I mentioned
anything about having the default Communities? It is working fine now that I
changed a setting in the Norton, if you check my reply to G. VanderMolen, you
will see the steps I took. I hope that solution will work for others having
the same problem. Thank you for trying to help, though :)

Thanks for that feedback. It seems inappropriate that the default
setting of NIS blocks access to newsgroups. Most users would not
know what settings in NIS to change.

You are welcome :) I have noticed a lot of posts saying to uninstall your
antivirus and such. I am afraid to run "barefoot" on the web or in my mail
and don't consider uninstalling a security program as an option. I would
much rather use ZoneAlarm Pro as my fire wall and hope they come out with a
Vista compatible version very soon.

I don't see your original post so that is probably where the conflict its.
MS Server were screwed up earlier last weeks end so that too doesn't suprise
me.

Just turn off e-mail scanning. You can retain the AV software (though
several of us think they're crap) but just turn off the scanning of incoming
and outgoing e-mail.

NOD32 is working fine here for AV.

McAfee antivirus seems to be especially troublesome when it
comes to Windows Mail, with Norton a close second.
If people uninstall those programs they should replace it
with a better behaved antivirus product.
For firewall I depend on the one furnished by Vista, which
is in addition to the NAT function of my router.

Thank you for the info :) I was under the impression, possibly misguided,
that Vista's firewall wasn't as robust as ZoneAlarm Pro? As to my router, it
is a Belkin wireless G, Model F5D7230-4 which is connected the the gateway?
or router from Charter Communications. The only identifier on that is
Tradename Ambit, Model U10C018. I have no idea how to set up security on
either device. I originally installed my Belkin on my desktop then just
hooked up the laptop to the cable until it connected then disconnected the
cable and from there on the laptop worked wirelessly. The desktop has
decided it is about to have "imminent hard drive failure" and I can not use
it until I get everything transferred over to a new hard drive. The Norton
says it is protecting the connection, and I surely hope so.

You are much better off contracting a virus than leaving Norton installed.

There are major problems with Norton and Windows Mail in Vista and if you
want things to work well, then you should get something less invasive than
Norton (or McAfee).

This is a case where the solution is much worse than the disease.
