Not strictly. There is a one time fee to sign up ($3.95). Better than
nothing tho, I would agree.

For all existing accounts... not just newcomers.

"Effective from April 1th, 2005, all non-converted accounts will stop
working."

Lets hope its an April Fool's joke in bad taste :)

This one is free also: http://www.x-xxxxat.org/index.php

Italian, no binaries, registration required.

From their FAQ

'11. Which limits of posting are on the newsserver ?

The newsserver can support 4 IP connections for single user and a total
of 500 users connected at the same time.'

Not quite in NiN's quarter of a million or so league :-)

They're fine, they have plenty of the main binary groups (and plenty of the
kinky ones). Pretty reliable (not as much as dfn was tho)...I suspect
they'll need to ramp up some due to all the people who will be flooding
their way (I did the one time payment about 18 months ago, never regretted
it for a second. I mean, four nucks? BFD.)

With binaries in general, it is so-so. True for text as well. I've
used free.teranews for a few years now; it's up and down. It'll
usually get you by, but if you need reliable service look elsewhere.
It can be pretty awful for days at a time.

I don't follow a.b.freeware, but right now free.teranews has a grand
total of 11 posts there. That includes two copies of a Swen variant,
four spams, and one request for warez.

but that is not expensive, if they offer a good service.
the only problem is if you live in a non-Euro country like the U.K, it
could cost more due to currency rates.

Came to $13.55US for a 410 day subscription. (The extra days take me to
April 1, 2006; that was done automatically.)

I get Usenet access through my main ISP, my backup ISP, and through
Individual.Net. (Not to mention the private servers I access.) I still
paid 'em. It's the best (no-binary) service out there, bar none. It's a
small price to pay.

Same on two reliable servers. It is quiet atm.

Tera is nice to have about for backup, but falls over too often to be
considered a NiN replacement.

That is not too bad then and that is with the Euro so high against the
U.S dollar

I only use this one, though my ISP.
