I use Outlook for my e-mails. Unfortunately, Outlook does not have access to
news groups. When I go to Mail to get access to the news groups, Mail
downloads all of the e-mails since I last used Mail. It may have been weeks
since my last use of Mail so the list is rather long (hundreds). Is there
any way to stop downloading all of these e-mails that I have already dealt
with on Outlook? Why does Outlook not provide access to Newsgroups?
Thanks,

Len Urban

I've never checked my e-mail from widows mail. I will try and see if get
e-mail back on Outlook.

What setting may I have wrong on Outlook?

Thanks

Hi Len,

In Mail, click tools/accounts and select your mail account. Click
properties, then on the general tab uncheck the box to include this account
when synchronizing. Repeat for other mail accounts as desired.

Outlook was never designed for use as a newsreader, and Microsoft will
likely not change this. They provide the function with the basic mail
program included with Windows, and that's generally sufficient.

You can go to Tools>Options>General then uncheck "Send and receive messages
at startup". That way Windows Mail only downloads emails when you tell it
to.

There is an add-in available from MAPIlab that will let you read newsgroups
in Outlook. Personally, I find it's interface and functionality to be
inferior to that of Windows Mail, but the OP may want to give it a try.

Yeah, but why did the accounts get set up in WinMail to begin with? If he
deletes the mail accounts, then it won't download the mail.

There are several switches to start Winmail in news mode only:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /newsonly
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /outnews
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe" /news

I believe the button on the Outlook toolbar for "read news" starts WinMail
in this fashion, but I'm not sure as I don't have Outlook installed.

Hi all:

Well, when I opened up my news group this morning I found more than a number
suggestions to solve my problem. I will sift through these and am sure I
will find something that works. Having spent some time in the Navy during my
younger years I was able to understand some of the language I was not able
to find in my dictionary.

Thanks to all of you,

This is easily fixed.

Whilst viewing your newsgroup in Windows Mail:
Click the View menu
Point to Current View
Put a dot by "Hide Read or Ignored Messages"

After reading your newsgroup and before exiting you'll need to hit
Ctrl+Shift+A (Mark All Read).
The next time you visit your newsgroup, only messages posted since your last
visit will be visible.

You need to do this for each newsgroup you regularly visit.

Does that mean you've tried setting WLM as default and Outlook still opens
WM? I've discovered WLM accepts the /outnews, /newsonly, /news switches and
does come up in news mode, but it does so very badly.
