"News" command disappeard in Outlook 2003

I added "News" to the "Go" menu item several days ago.

Now when I start Outlook it is not there. So I went back to
"Customize/Commands" to add it again, and "News" is no longer in the list of
commands. I can't find it anywhere.

So, in order to run the newsreader I have to manually run "msimn.exe
/outnews" from the command line (which is how I'm able to post this thread).

I searched the knowledge base but can't find anything (except for an issue
in a previous version of Outlook, which led me to the manual command I now
have to type).

How can I get this back into Outlook 2003?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

I had the same problem and was getting very frustrated
until I discovered the solution by accident:

The first thing you need to do is make sure that Outlook
Express is the default newsgroup reader in Internet
Explorer. Open Internet Explorer and go to TOOLS ->
INTERNET OPTIONS -> PROGRAMS, and select "Outlook
Express" for "Newsgroups". Once you've done this,
run "msimn.exe /outnews". A window will pop up that asks
you if you want to make Outlook News your default
newsreader. First, uncheck the box for "Check this every
time" and then, SELECT "NO"!!! It is very important that
you select "NO" instead of "YES". This will add
the "news" command back in to the "customize" window for
the "GO" command.

I can't explain why this works, it just does, and it will
crrectly open up "Outlook News" and not "Outlook Express
News" when you select GO -> NEWS in Outlook 2003.

Most users are finding that simply selecting OE as the default news reader
in Control Panel > Internet Options fixes this problem. The rest may not be
necessary. YMMV. This seems to be occurring only for users who have
installed in an upgrade scenario which leaves Outlook as the default news
reader instead of OE.

Russ,
The rest of my instructions are necessary because
when you start Outlook Newsreader and the window pops up
asking you if you want to make "Outlook Newsreader" as
the default newsreader, if you select "YES", this is the
*bug* that actually removes "NEWS" from the "GO" menu and
from the "CUSTOMIZE" window. I noticed that when I
selected "YES" and then checked Internet Explorer's
Option for "Newsreader:", there was nothing there. The
program had removed my selection of Outlook Express and
replaced it with a blank space. I then had to reselect
the scroll down menu and reselect Outlook Express. If I
then opened Outlook Newsreader again and selected "YES"
again to making it the default newsreader, Internet
Explorer again removed OE in Internet Explorer, thus
creating a loop. Only by selecting "NO" will the loop be
broken, and Outlook Express will remain as the Newsreader
selection in Internet Explorer.

I included the instruction of unchecking the box in the
pop up window asking if I want to check to see if Outlook
Newsreader is the default newsreader each time because if
you don't uncheck this box, this annoying window will pop
up everytime you start the newsreader.

Also, my computer scenario is I loaded Outlook 2003 onto
a reformatted hard drive and a fresh load of Windows XP.
I did not upgrade on top of an existing Outlook on my
hard drive. Everything worked great until I
selected "YES" to making Outlook Newsreader as the
default newsreader. I imagine that a lot of people are
not getting the pop up window because they have unchecked
this box sometime in the past on a previous version of
Outlook, and thus, selecting OE in Internet Explorer
Options fixes this *bug*.

Good information. We're getting varying reports. For many, simply selecting
OE as the default newsreader in Control Panel brings things back into line.
