whats a good news client that'll fit on a FLOPPY ?

Excellent client, but while idly checking my xnews folder I found
76 megs!

And it's an on-line only reader!

Any idea what all the Eudora mailbox stuff is doing in "data"?

And what's safe to clear out (there's loads of groups I've visited and
left)

I have a copy of 40tude on a CD that I can balance on my one of my
doublebreasteds.

Are you sure you meant to post to acf?

(Sounds a bit racy to me) ;o)

xnews

Not technically...I'm going by memory, but I believe that by default
Xnews saves all headers and the bodies of messages which have been
read. You can turn off storage; doing so will make it so nothing
other than configuration files are saved

It's not specifically a Eudora mailbox; it's just the standard mbox
format. The MBOX files are used to store headers and
downloaded message bodies.

The files associated with groups that you've visited and then left are
safe to delete. You can delete the others, but you will need to
redownload the headers after doing so, and any locally saved articles
(whether viewed in groups or moved to folders) will be lost.

You need to turn off storage, it's in setup. Under "storage" :)

Thanks dkg_ctc and Fran.

I keep storage on as I want to keep the headers - I don't fully understand
storage as I've got it set to remember all, but I don't really want the
bodies, but ISTR that when I set it to headers only it didn't seem to
remember anything- I'll try again, and delete old groups.

I changed the expiry rules and tried a quick compact and I've lost 5 meg
already!

Only 70 to go.....

Mike, it seems as if you have got Xnews set to save headers and
bodies. To change this got to Setup (CTRL+F1), select the Storage
tab, select Save Nothing and press Okay to make the change. That
will radically cut down your storage for Xnews.

But you will not see messages you downloaded on an earlier
session. Article > Reconstruct Thread (CTRL+U, I think) will get
past this on a thread by thread basis.

In your case the MBX extension used by Xnews for files where it
stores article bodies has been associated by Eudora for its
mailbox files. That's ok. You can leave it like that although it
can seem as if it is a bit of a distraction when you list the
files in the Xnews data folder and they are called Eudora files.

There are a number of progs that'll fit onto a floppy. But! what's the
point if you don't have your newsrc file or have to download one and
start over from scratch? It's rather doubtful that you'll be able to
save both your news client and your data file containing the newsgroups,
etc on a single floppy - at least the old 1.44 meg ones. Or is there a
workaround on this issue that I could have been using all these years?

I've found that storing headers only makes me unable to see what I've
read and what I haven't, ie the greyed out icon with the green blob is on
everything except new posts, it used to be on skipped posts after I'd
shift F8 and F8 'ed (xnews is far cleverer than me, I don't know what the
process is, but it's an excellent way of moving on!)

That did throw me, I've had plenty of email prog troubles. Seeing the
eudora icon there put the wind up me a treat.

Thanks very much for the info; as for the megabytage, I think I'll have
to go back to storing everything, but being more careful about cleaning
up

Assuming a personal web site, a batch file might work. Something
like --

ftp <url> <id> get newsrc info
start your news client
ftp <url> <id> put newsrc info
