I just changed my computer running WinMe for a new one running WinXP Home. Before buying, I burned all my personal files (mainly Word97 and Excel97 files) on DVD-R. I then copied back all my personal files on XP's DeskTop. Next, I reinstalled Office97 from CD. Then, using Excel97's icon, I created a very simple Excel97 file and saved it under the filename "number", then closed it. (I tried other filenames as well). What puzzles me is that each time I try to reopen that file, the following message pops up: "A file bearing the same name is already open. You can't open at the same time two files having the same name, even if the two files are located in different directories. Close the present file and rename one of the two files."
To begin with, my file was the only open file on the system. Besides, I searched the whole C: drive in case there was another file in the system that beared the same filename and same extension. No luck. Then I followed the advice in the message, but renaming my file didn't solve the strange problem. I am the only person to use this computer and I have never created a special account that would have given me special status (As administrator for example.) Can someone help me?
