Newegg selling bootleg copies of Windows 7?

It says that it's the Release Candidate. Don't know about the OEM bit, but
if it's like the (free) download, it's good to March 1, 2010. (It'll run,
but shut down every 2 hours, until June 1, 2010.) Maybe it's worth $9.99 to
someone who can't (or won't) download an ISO that's larger than 2 GB and
burn it to a DVD. (Shipping is free.)

I admit that the "specifications" written for it appear to be for the
original beta, but I hope that Newegg is providing the actual RC.

Looks to me like a pretty dubious offering, but I doubt that it's "fishy".
Newegg is a US company, and I can't believe they'd hope to get away with
something that Microsoft would not permit.

To anyone considering it, though: don't you know someone who can make you a
copy? If you want to be really scrupulous, you can get a key for the RC from
Microsoft without doing the actual download. (I wouldn't bother, though.
There are supposedly only 10 different keys altogether. Use your chum's key
with a clear conscience, or search for the list of the RC keys on the Web.)
A blank DVD disk costs less than $1 at the moment. With a 16X drive, it
takes a few minutes to burn.

The RC is supposed to be available for download until August 15, but keys
will be available after that.

The downloadable keys are only for the Ultimate version, though. If you
become enamored of the Ultimate-only features (like bitlocker), prepare to
pay the Ultimate price.

I got the August 8 bit of info from the text of the specifications. That why
I assumed it was still the beta.
What is the difference between the beta and the RC? I've never played the
beta game with any software so I honestly don't know how the whole system
works.

FWIW... The words "dubious" and "fishy" have practically the same
meanings.

She came down from the market, with a scowl on her face. She had been to
the docks, and had seen the longshoremen before her appointment with me.

Well, that was her story, anyway. I suspected she had snuck into the
backroom with the bagboy. He always had tuna for lunch, and the dubious
fishy smell on her breath gave her story away.

For most systems, beta goes out the door with a list of known bugs waiting
to be fixed and allows users to be the test dummies to help identify and
report other possible bugs. It is a time for feedback about features
totally disliked as well as suggestions from users as to what parts of the
program they do like.

In this case it gives the European Union's lawyers time to put in there two
euros worth as to how competitors are not going to be able to keep up with
the changing software.

A RC, Released Copy of the program hopefully has had the "benefit" of the
above feedback and testing. By then the author(s) have decided on what the
thing will actually look and act like. What can be fixed was and what could
not is usually removed or blocked from functioning, waiting for possible
future "improvements" known as patches, fixes, or service packs.

The beta build number was 7000. The release candidate, 7100. That doesn't
mean that 100 builds were performed between the two.

The obvious difference between the two was that the version of IE8 that was
included with the beta seemed to be really buggy. (The available IE8
upgrades would not install on Windows 7, so that mattered to me.) The one
that came with the RC was much nearer release quality.

Playing the Win7 beta game is almost a hobby unto itself, if you're prepared
to install the "unofficial" (leaked) builds off of the torrents or other
risky download sources. The latest build I've seen is 7264 (available in
both X86 and X64 flavors), but it can't be activated using the RC keys
without using a hack.

So are they saying the regular version isn't going to do that?
