I'm running Windows XP Professional and every time I try to add a my printer
(HP Deskjet 3820) I get the same message "RPC server unavailable". My
computer is not part of a network. Can anyone help please? I'm at my wit's
end.
Thanks in advance.

Try this...

Log in as admin.
Start -> run
Enter "MSConfig" (without the " marks)
Click OK
New window opens
Go to "Services" tab
Check there is a tick next to "Remote Procedure call (RPC)" and "Remote
Procedure call (RPC) locator".
Click OK
Reboot

Once you get it going, and after a short period of use the HP3820 stops
working can you let me know via a post in here.
HP seem in denial that this printer model is a piece of junk - a design
fault means that the cog driving the head service tray (the tray with
the ink waste tanks, heap wipes, and foam waste reservoir) breaks after
a short period of use. Sometimes I think the printer will keep going
depositing goobs of ink where it shouldn't go. Mostly I think it will
stop working, indicate a paper jam when there isn't one, and the head
unit will either jam in the off position, or not return to the off
position, as it collides with the head service unit that won't return to
the position where it is out of the way of the head unit.
It was always a cheap printer - and not marketed as something that was
for heavy use - but I am a bit upset that:
a) It occurs frequently on printers that only get occasional/normal home use
b)This seems to be a very common problem that HP don't seem to want to
admit.
c)HP do not supply a replacement part.

Are you sure that error message is exact, service not server?

RPC is the Remote Procedure Call service which is a default "service"
application that runs in Windows XP. It controls access to various
hardware and software.

Make sure it's enabled and set to Automatic start in your services. To
find the list of running services, click Start, Control Panel,
Performance and Maintenance, and then open the Services. Scroll down the
list to find Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

Instead of adding a printer, try installing the driver/software came with
the printer. During the installation you will be prompted to turn on the printer.
It will be then detected and installed properly. I amy be wrong but why not
give it a try. THis is how Canon (USB) printer is installed.
