Hi-

I fumbled through a win2k server install about a year ago. Recently I took
on another one for a friend. I'm stuck.
I hope someone will take some pity and guide me through this first hurdle

OK, I have installed win2k
gone through the active directory setup wizard
used the MS loopback as this will be the top DC on the network (very small
network)
I have since activated a reg. NIC and connected to the network.

Here are the problems that I'm experiencing and I don't even know where to
start:
1) I can't ping the router (or anything else on the network)
2) I can't delete the loopback connection. I can disable it, but can't
delete it

The NIC connection says there are some packets that have gone back and
forth. So it "appears" that it is working.

I have set the IP for the DC to 192.168.0.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.0.
I don't know "why", this just seems to be the norm.

I just want to be able to connect to the router (internet access) and then I
can hopefully stumble through the rest. But this first snag has got me.

Please help....,
Steve

Hi Bill,

I'm a bit confused by your response. All the other machines in the network
can ping each other, the router and access the web. Everything is great for
them. They are not currently joining any domains (workgroup only)

The new machine(DC) was just put on the network today and can only ping the
router.

I'm probably confused because I don't understand the fundamentals, but to me
this seems very strange. I have made sure that everything is on the same
subnet, etc. Everything looks fine. Just can't ping.

Thanks for the quick response. I look forward to further tips, if you have
any.

Check port settings on switch and NIC. A speed or duplex
mismatch will cause you to not be able to communicate. If
this doesn't work try removing tcpip and reinstalling it.
